Should I Brush My Teeth Before or After Breakfast?

For years, the American Dental Association has encouraged the public to brush twice a day to keep their oral health in pristine condition. To ensure this best practice is never skipped, many Americans choose to brush their teeth while they are getting ready for the day and winding down for the evening. But what if you’re completing your dental care regimen at the wrong part of your morning routine? Read on for why you should be brushing your teeth before breakfast!

Why It May be Better to Brush Before Breakfast

Have you ever woken up with a “mossy” taste in your mouth and an unpleasant odor on your breath? That’s because plaque-causing bacteria multiply while you sleep. Fortunately, you can start fresh by brushing your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste first thing in the morning! Not only will this practice protect your teeth from the acid in your food, but it will also jump start your saliva production and prevent decay.

Precautions for Brushing After Breakfast

Whether you enjoy a cup of coffee in the morning or love to kick off your day with a delicious (but pungent) onion bagel, many patients prefer to brush their teeth later in their routine. Fortunately, you can do so while still protecting your teeth by waiting at least 30 minutes before completing your oral hygiene regimen. After all, breakfast foods like orange juice and pastries are high in acid that can weaken your enamel. So, make sure to drink plenty of water or chew on some sugar-free gum until it’s time to clean your teeth.

How to Brush Your Teeth Properly

When you brush is important, but the technique you use is vital. Whether you prefer an electric toothbrush or a traditional manual alternative, make sure you follow the below steps:

  • Wet your toothbrush head with clean, running water before adding a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Brush your teeth for two minutes, making sure to gently scrub the front, sides, and chewing surface.
  • Use the bristles to lightly scrape your tongue from back to front to remove bacteria residue.
  • Spit out any leftover toothpaste and rinse your mouth with clean water.

While consistently brushing your teeth is priority number one, doing so before breakfast can benefit your oral health. Therefore, if you aren’t already, try completing your oral care routine first thing in the morning!
