Did you recently notice a small bump on your gums? Understandably, your first reaction could be concern or even panic. The good news? Most of these bumps are harmless. However, in some cases, they could signal a more serious oral health issue. To help you understand what might be causing the bump and when to seek help, here’s a breakdown of common causes and warning signs.

Common Causes of a Bump on the Gums

A bump on your gums may seem alarming, but it’s rarely an emergency. Below are some of the most common causes:

Cyst

Dental cysts typically form around the roots of dead or buried teeth. These small, bubble-like growths are filled with air, liquid, or other soft materials. They usually grow slowly and don’t cause symptoms unless they become infected. If infected, you may experience swelling and pain near the bump. Treatment often involves a straightforward surgical procedure to remove the cyst.

Abscess

An abscess is a pocket of pus caused by a bacterial infection. This bump may feel warm, soft, and painful. If you suspect an abscess, it’s crucial to see a dentist immediately. They will treat the infection and drain the pus to prevent further complications.

Canker Sore

Canker sores are small ulcers that can form at the base of the gums. While they’re harmless, they can cause discomfort. Most canker sores heal on their own within one to two weeks. In the meantime, you can use over-the-counter pain relievers to manage discomfort.

Fibroma

One of the most common causes of a bump on the gums is an oral fibroma. These noncancerous lumps form due to irritation or injury to gum tissue. Fibromas are typically hard, smooth, and dome-shaped. They’re painless and rarely require treatment unless they cause discomfort.

When to See a Dentist

Although most gum bumps aren’t cause for concern, certain symptoms may indicate a more serious issue. You should visit your dentist promptly if you experience any of the following:

  • Fever
  • Throbbing pain
  • A foul taste in your mouth or persistent bad breath
  • A sore that isn’t healing or is getting worse
  • Red or white patches inside your mouth or on your lips
  • Bleeding from the bump or sore

If you’ve discovered a bump on your gums, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with your dentist. They’ll diagnose the underlying cause and provide appropriate treatment to keep your smile healthy and pain-free. Remember, early action is the best way to address potential issues and maintain your oral health!
